Hiking routes in Calpe

From the Peñón to the salt flats, from the Toix cliffs to the Sierra de Oltà: Calpe is best explored on foot, with the Mediterranean always in view.

Beyond the beach, Calpe is a destination for coastal hiking and protected nature. The Peñón de Ifach Natural Park, the Las Salinas wetland, Morro de Toix and the Sierra de Oltà offer routes for all levels, with panoramas that explain why this corner of the Marina Alta is unique.

Climb to the Peñón de Ifach

Calpe's icon is conquered on foot. The trail climbs through white limestone and Mediterranean scrub to a dizzying viewpoint over the bay. In high season access often requires booking: always check the natural park rules before you go. Closed shoes, water and respect for the environment are essential.

  • Moderate difficulty: steep sections and some exposure.
  • Avoid the hottest hours in summer.
  • The reward: Calpe, La Fossa and Arenal from a bird's-eye view.

Las Salinas: an ecological walk

Between the town centre and the Peñón stretches the Las Salinas natural park, a wetland where flamingos, wading birds and soft dawn light are not uncommon. A flat walk, ideal for all ages and a beautiful contrast to the beaches: here the pace is one of observation and quiet.

  • Bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching.
  • Best early morning or at sunset.
  • Perfect as an easy route on the same day you climb the Peñón.

Morro de Toix

To the south, the cliffs of Morro de Toix offer trails with spectacular views over deep blue water and, on clear days, the silhouette of the Peñón on the horizon. A more vertical, maritime route: ideal for those seeking cliffs, sea breeze and wild-coast photography.

  • Take care on windy days; the edge is exposed.
  • Combines well with a swim in nearby coves afterwards.
  • Sunscreen and water: there is little shade.

Sierra de Oltà and viewpoints

The Sierra de Oltà crowns Calpe with pine forests and viewpoints from which the bay looks like a map. Routes of varying length: from short climbs to longer trails linking ridges and passes. The perfect choice when you want height, pine shade and a full panorama of the Peñón and the town.

  • Choose your route according to fitness; there are options for almost everyone.
  • In spring the Mediterranean green is at its best.
  • End the day with a swim at Cantal Roig or La Fossa.
